Points Based Migration System is Announced
The Points Based System (PBS) is the biggest shake-up of the immigration system for 45 years. The system will replace over 80 existing routes to work and study in the United Kingdom with five tiers. The system allows British businesses to recruit the skills they need from abroad while providing assurances to the British public that only those migrants we need will be able to come to the United Kingdom.
You may be aware of the new changes that came into effect in Nov 2008 regarding the Points Based System (PBS) which replaces the Work Permit application system when employing staff from overseas.
UK Employers needing staff now from overseas must first become licensed with the UK Border Agency before they consider taking on any new overseas workers and then justify a Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS) for each person before they can apply for Entry Clearance into the UK. Any extensions or transfers for existing overseas staff will have to comply with the new PBS also, which could affect current staff levels.
There are five (5) Tiers altogether, each Tier has it's own set of conditions and rules; the ones affecting employers most are Tiers 2 & 5, but we believe the main Tier affecting organisations will be Tier 2.
